Photoshop World 2007

Three days of fun and informative Adobe Photoshop, digital imaging, and graphic design training with eight different tracks and more than 80 classes.

Some overall tips:

  • 50% gray = neutral which will not show up when blending options are applied
  • Always apply filters, blending options, etc. on duplicate layers
  • Use opacity settings to adjust the intensity of whatever adjustments applied
  • Use smart objects as templates
    • Can easily change the image and text & all smart objects will be updated with the new image and applied filter (only in CS3)
    • You can also turn video into a smart object and have filters applied (only in CS3)

    Photoshop Visual Effects
    Here’s a list of some of the filters, blending options, tools, and tips used for the following:

    1. Natural Light Beams
    a. Select light beam area and fill it white
    b. Apply the following filters: motion blur, outer glow

    2. Pin-up Girl Effect
    a. Remove all details from photo
    i. Filter: surface blur – perfect for softening skin surfaces
    ii. Smudge tool at 10%
    b. Load luminosity as selections – Option+Command+~
    c. Filters: surface blur, photocopy, grain texture
    d. Blend modes: Overlay, Vivid Light, Soft Light
    e. Yellow color to age photo

    3. Using Warp Tool
    a. Manipulate texture to confrm to any shape
    b. Create texture by using the cloud texture within a one pixel wide selection and hen stretching it horizontally. Then add a touch of noise filter.

    4. Integrating Illustrator functions with Photoshop
    a. Illustrator:
    i. 3D revolve tool: Illustrator always revolve the object along the y-axis on the left side so create the shape detail on the right side
    ii. fill color as 50% gray to ensure the lighting effects will look right
    b. Photoshop:
    i. Copy and paste into Photoshop as “Pixels”
    ii. Apply filters and blending options to make the lighting pop

    5. Creative Dimensions
    a. Create water:
    i. Create texture by using the cloud texture within a one pixel wide selection and hen stretching it horizontally.
    ii. Filter: motion blur, chrome
    iii. Blending Mode: Color
    iv. Use displacement map to distort water reflection of images

    6. Pattern Maker
    a. Use for texture
    i. i.e. generate text over and over again, use the gradient tool, remove saturation, and apply an overlay blend mode
